DaysOfTheYear.com is billing Sunday, March 26, as “Neighbor Day.” But at our Watco locations across the country, “Neighbor Day” is observed informally, without fanfare, just about every day of the year.

At the Houston terminal in the Greens Port Industrial Park, for example, the Team is all about giving back to the community. A few years ago, the Team began assisting the nearby Woodland Acres Elementary School with financial support and sponsorships and read to children on Dr. Seuss Day. And last year, they organized a blood drive.

At the Blue Ridge Southern in North Carolina, Team members befriended a 90-year-old veteran of World War II who lived alone near the tracks, and made him an honorary BLU Team member. The BLU also has held coat drives for homeless veterans, and spent time cleaning up areas alongside the track, earning a community beautification award.

At Eastern Idaho Railroad at Twin Falls, Team members found a way to make a train ride happen for a young fan of theirs who has autism, and at the Boise Valley Railroad, they found a way to grant a wish to a man with a terminal illness who also wanted to take a train ride.

These kinds of stories pour into the Watco home office in Pittsburg, Kansas, regularly. We’re proud of our Team members for striving to make a difference not just in their jobs, but as good neighbors. Know of a story we haven’t yet written? Let us know by emailing astefanoni@watcocompanies.com

And happy Neighbor Day!
